The CDC are warning of a twindemic from a potential convergence of the seasonal influenza (flu) with an expected “second wave” of coronavirus cases in the fall and winter.

Flu viruses are constantly mutating so it is not a surprise for new flu viruses to appear each year. The timing of the flu peak is difficult to predict and can vary in different parts of the country and from season to season.

While it is not possible to say with certainty what will happen in the fall and winter, it is likely that flu viruses and the virus that causes COVID-19 will both be spreading.

So why is “twindemic” a challenge?

The CDC stated the increased chances of co-infections and an overwhelmed health systems. Symptoms are similar and diagnostic are not fast, people can best mitigate their risks with the flu shot plus social distancing.

Every year up to 650,000 people die of flu around the world, including in western and advanced countries, it makes you think how many people reported as dying from COVID so far this year actually died because of influenza complications.
